About the Convention

The London Convention brings together a wide range of private, statutory and voluntary organisations providing help to workless people and communities. Delegates will hear from London and national policymakers in over 30 presentations from organisations delivering front-line services in London.

The challenge for London

London is facing the toughest labour market conditions for sixteen years, but at the same time vacancies have been holding up. Delivering and planning employment and skills services in London is the biggest challenge in the UK. London has the highest concentrations of people with multiple barriers to work and some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. Child poverty has also remained stubbornly high.

How to respond to rising unemployment in London will be the key question for this year’s Convention. In 2009 the Flexible New Deal will start in parts of London and other reforms and programmes will have an increasing impact on lone parents and people claiming Employment Support Allowance and Incapacity Benefit. Doing more on integrating employment and skills remains a key issue for London.

National government has increasingly recognised that London needs a different approach and the London Skills and Employment Board, chaired by the Mayor, has been leading the way in developing a new vision for London’s labour market.

Key themes for the Convention

  • How should we respond to increasing unemployment?
  • The Flexible New Deal in London – will it perform better?
  • Improving skill levels – what are the priorities for London’s economy?
  • Doing more for black and minority ethnic communities – are radical steps needed to close the gaps?
  • Why are there increasing numbers on Incapacity Benefit for mental health reasons?
  • Drugs, homelessness and ex-offenders – are we doing enough?
  • Planning and delivery of welfare services – does London need more flexibility and powers?
  • How do we get back on track to reduce child poverty?

Attending the London Convention will be: staff from all DWP and LSC providers; Jobcentre Plus staff; employers active in providing opportunities; Local Authorities – elected members and senior officials; Local Strategic Partnership members.

The London Convention is organised by the Centre for Economic & Social Inclusion, with the support of Jobcentre Plus, the London Development Agency and the LSC. It builds on the annual UK Convention attended by 900 delegates each year.

CALL FOR CASE STUDIES AND POLICY SESSIONS

The London’s Welfare to Work Convention is an opportunity to share and learn best practice. It is also an event that facilitates discussion and debate around key issues.

Be part of this and propose a Case Study or Policy Session that will highlight the practice and thinking of your organisation. Each session lasts 40 minutes, which should be broken into 25 minutes presentation and 15 minutes for questions and answers. We are looking for the ideas and practices that delegates will find interesting and useful.
